Aims of the Project

The visualisation of the Valaam monastery’s main church in Lake Ladoga from in- and outside.
The visualisation of the Valaam monastery’s centre form the outside (only overall visaulisation)
The visualisation of the Salmi church from inside and the verification of the exterior visualisation.
Designing the “cave” which will be located in Evakkokeskus.

Implementation

We have photographed all the archives with pictures of the Valaam monastery’s main church in Lake Ladoga from in- and outside in the church museum, central archives of the orthodox church of Finland and the archives of the new Valaam monastery.

There are surprisingly only few photos which can be used in the project. There are no plan drawings of the main church in the archives. Those pictures, which can be found in the archives, are only the churches early plans, which can not be used in this project.

Additionally we have copied all the drawings and sketches of the buildings which were found in archives.

We have done an expedition to the area of Lake Ladoga. During this expedition the main church of the Valaam monastery was photographed from in- and outside. Additionally the two ringbuildings surrounding the main church were photographed. The accommodation of the order, offices, the residence of the igumen, dining room, three churches, hospital and the new hotel are located in these buildings.

Beside the documentation in the photos, we filmed the main church and all the buildings surrounding it.

The most important achievement of the expedition was that the makers of the 3D-modellisation had the chance to see the places themselves. Also the surrounding nature has to be experienced personally. Only so the real atmosphere can be created to the 3D-models.

The 3D-modellisation has proceeded according to the plan. The work is really enormous and challenging. The Valaam monastery has been the centre of the spiritual and intellectual life in Carelia during the last 1000 years. For this reason the 3D-modelling suites the Valaam perfectly, because once again the monastery is in the head of the development. It will be documented with the help of the newest technology in the 21st century.

The Salmi church archives have already been photographed. The actual photographing will take place in June 2006 in Salmi. There is already a 3D-model of the church. During this particular project we will do the additions and corrections needed for the 3D-model of the Salmi church.

Future

This is a one year project. We have made a good start in the challenging work of 3D-modellisation. Our great wish would be to continue this development work to create cultural history with this technical equipment which the 21st century provides to us.

We have discussed the 3D-modelling with the heads of the Estonian city Vöry. They are really interested in getting involved in the new project, if we can start one. They would participate with the university of Tarto.

The 3D-modelling opens up a new era for cooperation in culture and tourism.
