Scale models from digital 3D-model

Scale models, that can be assembled by onself, are one way to transfer cultural heritage and examine buildings. When cultural historical targets are modelled with 3D-modelling software, those models can be used also for making paper scale models.

There are two methods for making paper scale models from digital 3D-model:
In first method each side of the building is rendered through ortographical camera and rendered images are combined in image manipulation program. The roof of the building must be straighten separetaly. After that roof is rendered and finally all images are composed as one image and the surfaces for glue are added. Benefit of this method is that it is possible to calculate realistic shadows to the model.

Second method is to "open" the body of the building by rotating walls. This method produces a flat surface that can be rendered ortographically. After adding additional surfaces for glue and flattening and rendering the roof, it is ready to print. It is not possible to calculate shadows to the opened model. However, shadows can be baked to textures before opening the building.

Outbuilding for the Teacher Training College

Seminaarinmäki-project has produced a scale model of one of the project's target buildings. The purpose was to test how scale models could be produced from 3D-models.

-architect Constantin Kiseleff (1834-1888)
- The wooden outbuilding was built in 1882 and teared down after year 1967
- The building was located in Women's Seminar and it was built as refectory for female students.
